Idiot Proof Diet - Does It Exist?

The quest for the idiot proof diet is a national pastime. Because we all probably eat to much, or all the wrong foods, there is a constant battle with gaining weight. It too is a national pastime.

It's easy to ignore healthy foods when so many better tasting options and quicker possibilities are everywhere. Fast food restaurants allow us the time savings, regular restaurants save us a lot of work and provide a welcome social atmosphere.

Many people enjoy cooking and often go crazy with the many ways to make food taste better and provide way too much quantity. Being taught as a child to clean your plate just adds to the problem as an adult.

An idiot proof diet would be one that everyone would like the food choice, have the time to deal with, and cause us to lose weight. Trying to hit just two of the three requirements are slim. And finding a diet that does all three is almost impossible.

Ah, almost, that means it may be possible. It's pretty easy to define the basic weight gain problem. When we consume more calories than we burn, the calories turn into additional weight. There is no denying this basic fact. But it gets a little more complicated.

Another dilemma is the type of food or calories we consume makes a huge difference too. Foods with a high content of carbohydrates and fat tend to stick with you. And the volume of the food can have an impact on weight gain or loss.

Then there's the side issues of cholesterol, saturated fat, preservatives, MSG, and other items in food that can cause serious health problems. So it's not as simple of just counting calories, but what type of calories and paying attention to other ingredients.

So it can get downright confusing on what foods have what type of calories and other ingredients that are either good or bad for you. You can get a little help from labels at the grocery store, but what about restaurants? No labels at restaurants but some do offer a low cal meal or entree but even that's up to what low calorie implies.

The lowest call meal at Macaroni Grill is over 750 calories. Now compared to the average of 1250 calories in their typical entree that is low. But my interpretation of low calories would be considerably below that at 3-400 calories.

And the last, but not least issue, with anyone losing weight is each of us may have a different metabolism. We all know some people who eat anything they want and never gain weight. One of the reasons is usually a high metabolism that naturally burns more calories than average.

Even our age can impact our calorie burning abilities. Often times younger people have a greater ability to burn calories than older people. Lifestyle and even vocations have an impact on weight lose too.

Once you take a hard look at dieting, the many variables, individual considerations, and complicated calculations on calorie counting, you soon realize there may not be an easy solution. Especially a one size fits all solution.

So you would be better off looking for a diet to lose weight that fits you and provides the best means for you to lose those extra pounds. A good way to do this is to examine your activity level, current eating habits, and food choices.

Small, gradual changes to more healthy food choices, portion control, and increased activity can get you started on your weight loss goals. It's always easier on the individual to make small changes rather than radical ones that you will soon abandon.

That well might be your idiot proof diet. One that you can slowly adapt to and will continue throughout the rest of your life.
